Evaluate the role of instituti essays
Evaluate the role of instituti essays Evaluate the role of institutions in controlling surf culture. Assess the future of surfing on a global scale over the past 20 years. The Art of Surfing may be considered, as one of the greatest athletic feats known to man. Institutions have played a significant role in surfing. By controlling access and consumption through media and marketing. Surfing in my own personal opinion will on a global scale continue to expand and spread throughout every possible area in the world, so that all nations are able to experience surfing, and if this is not possible then at least experience the culture. Concepts such as media, commercialisation, consumption of culture, and marketplace all intertwine with surfing culture and the institutions that control it. Popular Culture also referred to as high culture in recent times, relates to the way in which a certain culture is made popular by the media, marketing and consumer products and also institutional powers such as Surf Clubs, local government etc. In surfings case it has been made popular through mass media and marketing of a certain image and attracted million upon millions of people all over the world to it. Institutions that are related to surf culture are the ASP, which is the Association of Surfing Professionals, the Government, which controls beaches and how they are used and protected, and also TNCs, which stand for Trans-National Corporations and are associated with the marketing, distributing and spreading of surfing as a culture. In recent years surfing has become an extremely big marketplace. Trans-National Corporations control surfing culture through the production and selling of merchandise, clothing etc. through companies such as Rip Curl, Billabong and Quicksilver. At the present time the advertising and surfing market is worth approximately seven billion dollars. Products that can be bought, that are associated with surf culture can vary from boa ...

How has Christ been Understood to be Present in the Eucharist Essay
How has Christ been Understood to be Present in the Eucharist - Essay Example This essay stresses that Christ is not only the author and minister of each sacrament, but equally the exemplar of the grace which each sacrament is designed to realise, by naming explicitly the grace or virtue conveyed in and through each sacrament. In the Eucharist, this particular grace is self-giving. Macquarrie forwards the idea that through these sacraments, ââ¬Å"thingsâ⬠which are considered otherwise ordinary are taken to new spiritual levels, or peopleââ¬â¢s understanding of them have, by virtue of the persistence of their faith, undergone intense deepening. Hence, bread which is of the earth and which human hands have made become the ââ¬Å"Word of Lifeâ⬠and Wine, normally considered the fruit of the vine and a product of human toil and labor, becomes the ââ¬Å"spiritual drinkâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"cup of our salvationâ⬠. This paper makes a conclusion that there is no doubt that the Eucharist is very important in the Anglican Church. No one by a bishop or presbyter may administer the Eucharist and it mandates that ââ¬Å"pure wheaten bread and wine, being the fermented juice of the grape, are the necessary elements of the Sacrament.â⬠The doctrine of the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church with respect to Transubstantiation was one and the same. When the reign of Edward VI ushered in a more Protestant ideology, transubstantiation was refuted and denied. The Doctrine of Transubstantiation, many Anglicans believe, tend to obscure the deeper meaning of the Eucharist.

Immigration(advantages or problems) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Immigration(advantages or problems) - Essay Example Furthermore, they help address the need of the country for seasonal labor during harvest time. Illegal aliens, as they are commonly referred to, readily accept relatively lower wages as compared to the local labor force for the same type of work or amount of workload in light of their need to get jobs straight away ("Wikipedia"). In this regard, some who profit from this arrangement assert that illegal immigration is indeed beneficial since the country of origin of the illegal alien, which is usually a developing country, earns dollar through overseas workers' remittances. Similarly, the US-based employers may take advantage of relatively lower labor expense with the substantial availability of labor provided by illegal immigrants (Hanson). However, these people fail to take into account the adverse effects of illegal immigration to the economy as a whole. They have a limited perception of the problem such that they only consider the gains directly derived from illegal immigration and not the other economic and social costs. There are myriad disadvantages in connection with illegal immigration. One of them is in terms of the intensified competition in the labor market. American citizens and other legal immigrants or residents can often be heard complaining that it is harder to look for jobs these days. This can be attributed to the fact that there are a growing number of illegal immigrants in the country that directly compete with the local labor force for available jobs. With this, legal workers continue to experience job displacement due to illegal aliens. As discussed, illegal immigrants who seek employment in the country willingly settle for below average wage levels. Although employers benefit from this type of arrangement, it should be highlighted that such is generally detrimental for the entire labor force. By accepting wages that is less than the minimum wage standard, the income mainly coming from wages received plummets (Hayworth). This distorts the labor conditions in the country. Decreased wages is especially harmful for workers who are already on the verge or even below the poverty line. In addition, this changes the consumption propensity of legal workers and may diminish the quality of their and their families' lives. Another major disadvantage of illegal immigration is that it further buoys up expenditure of the federal government. Based on numerous reports, an increasing number of communities across the nation continuously contend with over budgeting in order to make hospital care and educational services to illegal immigrants and their families. Given this scenario, the government would need to find a way to address budget deficits to take into account these public services for all including illegal immigrants. To compensate for the portion of the budget used up for illegal immigrants, it may be expected that the government would impose tax increases which would be shouldered by legal workers. In the end, legal workers who fund social security services through the taxes remitted to the government each payday are burdened with the problem brought about by illegal immigration. According to studies, illegal immigration also has an effect on the health conditions in the US. Some assert that the presence of illegal immigr

Brannigan Case Analysis Essay
Division has the largest soup market share in the United States at 39. 8%. They are willing to change and have the capital to do so. Weaknesses: The soup industry as a whole has been on a consistent decline over the last several years. Branniganââ¬â¢s has wasted money acquiring small businesses that have done little to nothing for profits. They have also been developing different types of soup in which only 1 out of 100 is actually well received by consumers. Opportunities: They have the potential to be the leaders in healthy canned soups that are offered in a variety of trendy flavors. Brannigan Foods is already a well ââ¬âestablished brand with many loyal followers who can regain their brand identity through less marketing than a newer or smaller business. Threats: Frozen and deli soup industries are trending and causing the market shares of shelved soups to plummet. Any quick and easy meal option from fast food to macaroni and cheese are threats to this industry and to Branniganââ¬â¢s The problem presented in this case is that Mr. Bert Clark needs to make a formal budget and action plan for the CEO to address the three year downturn in profitability, market share and sales. Consumers arenââ¬â¢t purchasing as much soup as they have in the past. With so much variety, not only within soups, but among all food options, itââ¬â¢s hard to make consumers choose only your brand every time. Price plays a large role in buyer decisions when it comes to items that they plan to store in their cupboard. If the price isnââ¬â¢t low enough, they can just switch brands or wait until later to purchase their stock items. Branniganââ¬â¢s has been steadily increasing their price to ebb the effects of the lower sales amounts. Branniganââ¬â¢s hasnââ¬â¢t done anything to increase the value of their soups in the minds of consumers; they have only raised the price. The true problem is that customers arenââ¬â¢t finding enough value in Brannigan Foods Soups to rationalize spending more on them than they had before. I propose that they have a contest to develop new flavors of soups, with the winner receiving a combination price of money and a yearââ¬â¢s supply of Brannigan Foods Soups. Buying up smaller brands of soups doesnââ¬â¢t sound feasible seeing as how it hasnââ¬â¢t worked at any time before for this company. Another option is to seasonalize the soups to allow for new flavor varieties to be introduced in spurts. Heartier (potato, noodle and cream) soups are desired in the winter, where as a gazpacho is in a higher demand in the summer. Allow consumers to take surveys to receive coupons for your products and ask them what they want in a soup. The contest concept can do wonders for creating a buzz about your product and is the best alternative. Even more importantly, you are gaining insight into exactly what the consumers want. This nation has been so overly advertised to that people tend to ignore ads all together. What they donââ¬â¢t ignore is the chance to win something with no risk. Layââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Do Us a Flavorâ⬠contest has been a great success over traditional marketing strategies. Why you ask? ââ¬Å"The answer is simple: consumers donââ¬â¢t trust traditional marketing strategies anymore, and businesses are getting creative, using consumer-generated marketingââ¬âdirectly involving the customer in the marketing and development of productsââ¬âto succeedâ⬠.

The Lottery And The Masque Of The Red Death Essay
One of the greatest mysteries of a personââ¬â¢s life questions the time of their death. Those who live to the fullest understand this concept completely to achieve that level of happiness. On the other extreme end, it can cause nightmares to those that try their utmost to run away from the clutches of death. This notion is masterfully inquired into the gothic works of Edgar Allan Poe. The best implementation of this idea is in his ââ¬Å"Masque of the Red Deathâ⬠short story which deals with the abstract of death itself. Shirley Jackson, the author of ââ¬Å"The Lottery,â⬠published the narrative 100 years after Poeââ¬â¢s own. Despite the difference in time she still draws the same conclusion about deathââ¬â¢s certainty just as Edgar Allan had. Thus, Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In comparison with ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠, despite the initial mood of a warm summer day, Jackson quickly spins it around to resemble a ghastly setting much like Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Masque of the Red Death.â⬠When they bring a stool to place the black box on top, a similar atmosphere is created amongst the village crowd. The narrator explains further by saying, ââ¬Å"The villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stoolâ⬠(Jackson). What grabs the readerââ¬â¢s attention is how each villager draws back from the stool rather than rushing to have a better look. This is odd because, under normal circumstances, a crowd at a lottery will be eager to find out who wins; however, since they were all keeping their distance from the box, not only is it a sign of dark foreshadowing, but it also creates a nervous and anxious mood. Even with both stories introducing uncertain and tense feelings, the two authors take contrasting disputes to inflict a theme of inevitability. The route Poe takes introduces a conflict that differs from Jacksonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Lottery.â⬠From the way the guests avoid the Red Death in nervous tension displays a clash of man vs. nature. This retort against a natural force is visible when a masked figure strolls through the ongoing party: ââ¬Å"There were found none who put forth hand to seize him; so that, unimpeded, he passed within a yard of the prince s person; and, while the vast assembly, as if with one impulse, shrank from the centres of the rooms to
